Set up your mail app.

Two ways to read your mail. Webmail needs nothing at all; your own app takes about a minute.

Use webmail

No setup

Sign in with your full address and mailbox password. Nothing to install and nothing to configure — useful on a borrowed computer, or before you set up a phone.

Open webmail

Or use the mail app you already have

Every mailbox is an ordinary IMAP account, so Apple Mail, Gmail, Outlook and Thunderbird all work. These are the only settings you need.

Incoming (IMAP)

SSL/TLS
Outgoing (SMTP)

Your full address, e.g. hello@yourdomain.com

The mailbox password you set when you created it

If your app insists on STARTTLS for sending, port 587 works too.

Gmail app

Android and iPhone. Adding an account here does not move your mail into Google.

  1. 1Open Gmail and tap your profile picture, then Add another account.
  2. 2Choose Other — not Google.
  3. 3Type your full address and tap Next.
  4. 4Choose Personal (IMAP).
  5. 5Enter your mailbox password and tap Next.
  6. 6Incoming server: set Server to mail.nearlyfree.email, Port to 993, Security to SSL/TLS, and Username to your full address.
  7. 7Outgoing server: the same server, Port 465, Security SSL/TLS, and leave Require sign-in on.

Outlook

The mobile app and the desktop version differ slightly; both are below.

  1. 1Mobile: Settings → Add mail account → Add email account.
  2. 2Type your address, then turn on Advanced settings before continuing — Outlook will otherwise guess and fail.
  3. 3Choose IMAP, then fill in mail.nearlyfree.email with port 993 for incoming and port 465 for outgoing, username being your full address.
  4. 4Desktop: File → Add Account, type your address, then open Advanced options and tick Let me set up my account manually.
  5. 5Choose IMAP, then set incoming to port 993 with SSL/TLS and outgoing to port 465 with SSL/TLS.
  6. 6Enter your mailbox password and connect.

Any other app

Apple Mail, Thunderbird and the rest ask for the same four things: the server, the port, the security type, and your full address as the username. Choose IMAP rather than POP, or your mail will only ever exist on one device.

If it will not connect

It says the password is wrong
The username is the whole address, not the part before the @, and the password is the mailbox password rather than the one you sign in to nearlyfree.email with. They are different on purpose.
It warns about the certificate
Check the server name is exactly mail.nearlyfree.email. A typo, or an old setting pointing somewhere else, is what usually causes this.
Mail arrives but will not send
Sending is the outgoing server, and most apps need it told separately. Make sure it is set to port 465 with SSL/TLS and that authentication is switched on.
Nothing arrives at all
Check the domain shows as active in your dashboard. Until all of its DNS records resolve — the MX record above all, pointing at mail.nearlyfree.email — other mail servers have nowhere to deliver to.
