If your team lives in those, keep them — they are good, and this is not a replacement for them. But plenty of small teams sign up for one reason: they want hello@ and billing@ on a domain they own. Then they pay every month, per person, for six things nobody opens.
This is the one part, done properly: real mailboxes, DKIM that is actually checked, your mail in and out whenever you want it. No assistant reading it, because there is no assistant.
Questions worth asking first.
Moving email feels risky, so here is the honest version.
- Can I use my normal mail app?
- Every mailbox is an ordinary IMAP account, so Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Outlook and the Gmail app all work, on a laptop or a phone. Or use our webmail at webmail.nearlyfree.email and set nothing up at all — it is there whenever you want it, and optional.
- Can I bring my existing mail across?
- Yes. Export from your current provider — Gmail and most clients produce an mbox file — and import it straight into the mailbox from the dashboard. Whole Maildir archives work as well, folders and all.
- Can I get my mail back out?
- Any time, from the same screen. The Maildir export is lossless: folders, read and unread, flags, everything. It is a normal archive another mail server will accept, so leaving is a download, not a support ticket.
- Will what I send land in spam?
- DKIM, SPF and DMARC are generated when you add the domain, and the panel checks them against live DNS rather than assuming they are right. Until they resolve, together with the MX record that brings your mail in, the domain is not marked active.
- Do I have to move my domain?
- No. Your domain stays where you bought it. You add a few records at your registrar and nothing else changes — the website on that domain is untouched.
- I don't have a domain yet. Can I still start?
- Yes — sign up free and add the domain when you have one; the free plan does not expire. A domain is the part after the @, and any registrar sells them: a .mn from a Mongolian registrar, a .com from anywhere. It stays with them; you only add four records here.
- Does anything read my mail?
- No. Your mail is not scanned, profiled, or used to train anything. There is no assistant here to feed it to, which is rather the point.
- What if a mailbox fills up?
- Each mailbox has its own storage. Old mail can be archived off with the export, and you can move an address to a mailbox of its own rather than paying per person for space nobody uses.
- How do I pay?
- By bank transfer, from whichever bank you already use. The invoice shows an account number, the amount, and a short reference like TEAM-6WR8DR: type it into the description field of the transfer and your plan turns on a few minutes after the money lands. No card, no account with a payment provider, nothing to set up. The free plan needs none of this.
- What happens if I stop paying?
- You drop to the free plan rather than losing anything: the domain and its mail stay put, and you keep one mailbox. Export first if you want a copy — that never expires.
